Table of Contents
ToggleIf you want to improve your AI citations — getting your business recommended by ChatGPT, cited in Google AI Overviews, or referenced by Perplexity — you need to build specific trust signals. Every item on this list is a concrete action that helps AI systems recognize and cite your business more consistently.
Content Signals
1. Add a FAQ section to every service page. FAQ content is the single most cited content format in AI-generated responses. Four to six questions per page is a good starting point.
2. Write answer-first content. Open every article and page with the direct answer to the implied question. AI systems extract the clearest, most direct answer they can find.
3. Publish comprehensive articles, not thin posts. Aim for 1,000–1,500+ words for blog posts on key topics. Short, surface-level articles rarely get cited.
4. Use clear, descriptive H2 and H3 headings. Structure your content with headings that describe exactly what each section covers — ideally phrased as questions or direct statements that match search intent.
5. Create original data, frameworks, or research. AI systems love citing original data — statistics from your own research, proprietary frameworks, case study results with a clear quotable key finding.
6. Define your terms clearly. Include clear, concise definitions of key terms in your field — especially newer terms like “AI Visibility Audit” or “Generative Engine Optimization” that AI systems are still building consensus definitions around.
Technical Signals
7. Implement FAQPage schema on all FAQ-containing pages. Validate it using Google’s Rich Results Test.
8. Add LocalBusiness schema to your homepage. Include complete NAP (Name, Address, Phone), service area, business type, and opening hours.
9. Add Service schema to each service page. Include name, description, provider, and areaServed fields.
10. Add Article schema to blog posts. Include author, datePublished, dateModified, headline, and publisher fields.
11. Ensure your site is fast and crawlable. Monitor performance in Google Search Console. A technically broken or slow site is crawled less thoroughly — and cited less often.
Authority Signals
12. Create real author pages for your content writers. Include a professional photo, bio, credentials, and links to external profiles. Connect the author page to bylines on every article.
13. Get published in regional and industry publications. Even one or two guest articles per quarter compounds over time into meaningful third-party authority.
14. Appear on podcasts or in interview-format content. Podcast mentions are increasingly indexed and used by AI systems as authority signals.
15. Maintain consistent NAP across all platforms. Inconsistency confuses AI systems trying to validate your identity.
16. Build out your Google Business Profile completely. A fully completed GBP with services, descriptions, regular posts, photos, and active review management contributes directly to local AI search visibility.
17. Earn reviews and respond to them. Review volume and recency signal to AI systems that your business is active and trusted.
